27 Years Of Lloyd

November 19th, 2007 · 2 Comments

lloyd-carr.jpgI keep seeing news stories saying that Lloyd Carr called it quits today after 13 years at Michigan. The only problem with that is that Carr was hired by Bo Schembechler back in 1980 to be the defensive backs coach, and never left. Carr has put in 27 years of service in Ann Arbor, and instead of speculating about who is next, talking about the downs of his career, please at least reflect some on his place in coaching history.

I don’t really care if you are a friend or foe of the maize and blue, Carr has been a damn fine head ballcoach with an overall record of 121-40 to back that up. Forget about why this happened, and spend at least 24 hours giving this man the respect he earned… especially from Michigan fans for his 27 years of service.

By the way, I don’t know for sure, but was the game against OSU this weekend the first time ever that Lloyd rocked the hoodie? If there ever could have been a sign that Lloyd was done, I think ditching the collared shirt in exchange for the hoodie was a pretty telling sign.

Hopefully the timing of Lloyd Carr’s resignation wasn’t hastened by a bandwagon filled with malcontents. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of Michigan football, but will forever be a fan of college football. Carr will be walking away from the head job at Michigan leaving a legacy summed up in one word. Class. The record of his student athletes speaks for itself. Carr has been great for college football and will be missed. Thanks for your article reminding us that Lloyd Carr was “a damn fine head (foot)ball coach”. Based on the way he represented his university and community in the media, I would suggest that he is a damn fine person.
