Honestly People, How Is Mike Keenan Employed And Joe Torre Is Out Of A Job?

October 20th, 2007 · 1 Comment

keenan.jpgOkay, well Torre turned down a one-year deal today… but probably because the Yankees treated him like a disposable diaper. They crapped all over him for the past few weeks and then offered him a one-year deal at a significant pay cut. I guess in the end it was a smart move? I mean, if you want to fire someone that the players, fans, and media all love, isn’t it better if he turns you down instead?

This still doesn’t get to Mike Keenan, who I can only assume was even interviewed because just like the NFL teams must interview one African-American coach during the hiring process, I must assume that each NHL team must interview at least one “special” candidate who’s mental prowess is on par with a brain damaged gopher… or Gary Bettman for that matter.

So take the Calgary Flames, who have hired Keenan after two quick exits from the playoffs following a 1st and 3rd place finish in the Northwest Division, are the latest team to give him a job and I’m at a loss for words. Yes, Keenan has led one team to a Stanley Cup - although one might argue Mark Messier has more leadership than Keenan - but that Cup was in 1993-94: 14 years ago. In those 14 years, he has led his teams to the playoffs, I believe, only 3 times managing to win only once. Also, other than a 2nd place finish in the Central Division with the Blues, Keenan has not led any team to a better finish than 4th in their own division, and no playoff births since 1996-97.

Why is it that the NHL has to be the league with the least amount of sense floating around in front offices? This is just getting ridiculous to the point that all other league owners and management - Bud Selig included - are starting to look like MENSA members in comparison to the NHL.
