Boy, What A Crappy System

fox-bcs.jpgI love parity. There, I’ve said it. I love it and the BCS does not, because once again it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas controversy.

Right now, Jason King at Yahoo! Sports predicted that the BCS title game will see Ohio State losing to Oklahoma. That was a nice try and all, but there are big problems with that prediction… mainly that it’s total crap, and here’s why.

Ohio State, right now is basically in a tie for first place in the BCS. Over the weekend, the SEC announcers on CBS were pining about how “unfair” the BCS was because it “favors teams from the weak Big 10″ and “punishes teams from the SEC”. As much as I understood that point, it was grossly inaccurate and on par with analysis one might get from a 5th grade classroom. OSU, and all undefeated/ big name teams for that matter, get an advantage from the pollsters, not the BCS. How can I make this assertion? Well, it’s actually quite simple. Right now, the computers have 3 SEC teams in their top 4 and only 2 Big 10 teams in their top 24… with #1 OSU currently locked in a tie for 5th with Arizona State and ranked lower than LSU, South Carolina, and Kentucky. So remind me how then the BCS favors teams from the Big 10 and not the SEC? Friggin’ CBS announcers are terrible I tell you… terrible.

So, back to King’s prediction: Oklahoma is 11th in the computers and the Big 12 ain’t getting any better. Even with a win in the Big 12 title game, hypothetically a 1 loss SEC champion will be much higher ranked in the computers… even if OU is higher in the other polls. In my mind, because the computers have those three SEC teams in the top 4, I think that it’s a safe bet that one of the two teams in this year’s title game will be the only one loss team to emerge from the SEC.

Also, if I learned anything from last year, with Michigan getting leapfrogged in the last poll by Florida, the voters are not afraid to atone for mistakes… and putting an Oklahoma team that did not even play a team ranked in the top 10 would be considered a mistake in that realm. So if you ask me, Oklahoma can win out and still not get in… their strength of schedule might turn out to be the critical factor.

The same can be said for Ohio State right now, and I’m 100% confident when I also say this: Ohio State will NOT go undefeated this year. Right now, OSU’s toughest game/ best win was against Purdue who is also the only opponent they have played which is currently ranked in the BCS top 40. So forgive me if I am a skeptic that OSU will roll through the rest of their schedule that includes 5 teams currently ranked in the BCS top 40, including 4 in the top 30. Again, in case you forgot, the Buckeyes will NOT be playing for the title in January. I’m kind of wondering what kind of deadline King was on… and who he gets his crack from… because picking OSU is simply not wise; I think like Arizona State their weak schedules to date have inflated their records.

So, now, the big question is if I have the balls to make my own ill-conceived prediction or if I’m just going to cut down this one. Well, kind of sort of. I’m going to play the odds.. give you three possibilities and from them, I think two play in the title game:

Team 1:
I’ve already spewed out so much anti-Buckeye propaganda I think you know my thoughts on them staying at #1. Thus, at some point the Bulls from South Florida will have their shot at holding onto #1, and considering that the computers have USF at #1 already, this is their ranking to lose from this point on. Actually, it is quite possible for USF to jump OSU even in the event that OSU wins out. So basically what I’m saying here is that if USF wins out, they’re in.. no matter what. And to be honest, although its going to be tough, it’s definitely not a gauntlet of teams ahead of them like in the SEC or Pac 10.

Team 2:
I pretty much already said it: the BCS loves the SEC, contrary to what some CBS announcers may say. If any of the three one loss SEC teams (LSU, South Carolina, or Kentucky) they’ll be in the game, no questions asked.

Team 3:

In the event that South Florida loses a game, or that no SEC team makes it out with only one loss, there is another option, and that is a one loss Pac 10 team. Let’s not forget that Cal still plays USC and Arizona State, USC still plays Oregon, Cal and Arizona State, etc, etc. So if one team can make it out of that stretch with only one loss on their season, they easily compete for a title spot too.

That’s it, that’s my call. I know it does not say much, but I really think that one of the Pac 10 teams has to come out of this with only one loss and there’s a good chance we get one SEC team or USF that makes it too. It’s ill-advised and most likely incorrect, but I thought I’d at least take a look and see if I could predict the madness well in advance of the end of the season.
