Oh… it could be a dream come true. All England needs to do is start playing rugby instead of playing whatever it is they have been playing, sack up, and beat Australia.
Yea, I know.. not gonna happen. So the 2007 IRB Rugby World Cup is down to the quarterfinals now with two surprises: one that I quasi-predicted and another I did not see coming at all.
The first is Argentina winning Pool D. I thought that Argentina was a “sleeper” team for the quarters but also thought France was strong enough to get the the finals… oops. The other surprise(s) of course is Fiji taking second in Pool B instead of Wales. Not that it matters past this weekend but it’s still a shocker. So, due to unforeseen circumstances I need to readjust my predictions and let’s take a look at the quarters… shall we?
Saturday’s Games:
Australia vs England: England has struggled while Australia has cruised through pool play with a point differential of +174; England limped out of Pool B with a total PD of +20. I think the Aussies take this game. It’s definitely not 2003.
New Zealand vs France: I know that France is the host country… but no. New Zealand is absolutely a lock in this game.
Sunday’s Games:
South Africa vs Fiji: Fiji was a pleasant surprise but are coming out of Pool C with a -22 PD. RSA on the other hand is +142 and that includes a match against England. This game… as well as the NZ-France game probably won’t be worth watching unless you might enjoy watching the slaughter which would follow if the New England Patriots played Hoover High School.
Argentina vs Scotland: Okay, so team-wise, this might be the contest with the least “brand” appeal… but its probably going to be the most interesting match all weekend long. Argentina was a great story in pool play and Scotland barely beat Italy. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Scotland loses to the only team worth a damn from the Western Hemisphere.
Semifinals:
According to my logic, we have:
Australia vs New Zealand in the World Cup’s version of the AFC playoffs and…
South Africa vs Argentina who will play to be this year’s runner-up.
Finals:
I think the All-Blacks beat the Springboks in an all Southern Hemisphere final.
