Calling Lloyd Down From The Ledge

capt51afb9b8fa834c53aba52daa2ce915bcappalachian_state_football_ncws102.jpgAnd to be honest, it’s not just Lloyd Carr who’s out on the ledge right now; I’d say a good 75% of Wolverine fans contemplated it at some point Saturday afternoon… and potentially even today after completely dropping out of the top 25. That’s epic.

But no matter how badly Michigan played and failed this weekend, there’s no reason to call for Lloyd Carr’s head which seems to be the assumption/ preference of many people based on my site stats and the searches I’m popping up in (Fire Lloyd Carr, Lloyd Carr resignation, Fire Lloyd Carr website). Instead, let’s consider three other worthy individuals in need of some blame here… and probably a pink slip for at least one, if not more.

Who Scheduled This Thing Anyway?
Mr. William C. Martin did. Well, he at least had a large part to do with that. And here’s my question: when you decide to schedule a D 1-AA team on your schedule, why in the name of Rocky III do you pick the best, or one of the best? You know it doesn’t matter who you pick… so why not go ahead and schedule Redneck State College instead of a dominant force in the division? What do you have to gain? Certainly not as much as you stand to lose. Moving on.

What The Hell Is Special Teams Quality Control?
Michigan seems to have ditched the Special Teams Coordinator position and added three first year coaches who’s jobs are “quality control”. Jamie Brown is the coach in charge of quality control of the special teams. To me, two fourth quarter field goals being blocked is one really screwed up version of quality control. He might be a good coach, but if the axe has to fall on someone’s neck this is an easier target than a drugged tiger on a safari hunt.

An Oldie, But A Goodie
After last year’s Rose Bowl debacle I called for Scott Loeffler to be dragged out of his office, tarred, feathered, and asked politely to pack his s*^t and get out. My opinion has not changed. Look at the stat line for Chad Henne in last weekend’s game:

  • 51% completion percentage
  • 6.3 yards per completion
  • 1:1 TD:INT

Those are absolutely, completely, terrible stats for a 4th year starting quarterback at the University of Michigan playing against a lesser opponent. In theory, Michigan is one of the elite schools where if a quarterback starts for three years they should, in all honesty, be able to carry their team in a situation like this. Henne’s monumental failure to take this game into his hands is a direct reflection of the man who “is responsible for coaching the quarterbacks” and “has worked to instill a mistake-free mentality among Michigan’s signal callers”.

Again, I’ll state there’s no questioning that Scott might be a good coach; but good coaches produce good players and great coaches produce great players.

So any of you looking for a Lloyd Carr lynching in words… sorry, not here. But asses do need to get fired for this… that’s the way these things work.
