Jumping The Shark(ie)

lou-sharkie.jpg[When it comes time to talk San Jose Sharks hockey, it's time to Jump the Shark(ie). A column based on my thoughts, observations, and commentary on my favorite NHL franchise - and named in homage to one really crappy episode of Happy Days that more or less, signified the coming of the end ]

Same Sharks, Different Year

One again, its the offseason, free agents are leaving the Sharks one by one and so far little effort has been made to re-sign players. In addition, they do not seem interested in even making the appearance of being players in the free agent market. They did get Joe Thornton to ink an extension which is a huge deal, but Joe can’t do it by himself. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Chris Drury was a lock to sign with the Sharks - in case you missed it he is now a New York Ranger. Another rumor is that they are in the mix for free agent defenseman Sheldon Souray. All in all I have to hope that the decision to let Scott Hannan go was a calculated decision and they know something we all don’t.

I’ll keep this one short, just getting started in the offseason, and its quite possible that the Sharks buy in to Billy Beane’s theories that you really can’t build a team in the offseason, because you just can’t tell how a guy is going to play. I hope they feel free to make a few more moves, trades if necessary, because as a fan its great to be in the playoffs every year, but its all the more reminder that the Sharks are the annual bridesmaid and it would be nice to see them up there holding the Stanley Cup in 2008.
