I had to scoff at the Yankees titling their strength and conditioning coach head of “performance enhancement”… just seemed like they could have come up with a more appropriate name that didn’t imply he was Jason Giambi’s personal trainer. Similarly, the England National Rugby Team has announced that they have brought a “mental skills” coach on board for their preparation for the 2007 IRB World Cup.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m smart enough to know that A-Rod sees a psych, and apparently we can all agree it did wonders for him in the first half of this season. Sport therapy has been around for years and is probably here to stay because most athletes will do whatever it takes to get an edge. But honestly; “mental skills” coach? Are the rugby players in England trying to put the circular peg in the square hole or something? Please, let’s put some thought into naming these things before you go ahead and make them official from now on.
