The Giant Walk Of Shame

June 26th, 2007 · No Comments

giant-walk.jpgTypically I comment and write about the A’s, but most of my friends and family are SF Giants fans so I do tend to still follow the team pretty closely. Right now the Giants are in a much better position to speculate about the future for, so I figured I’d give a shot at suggesting some changes that competent management could/ should make this season/ offseason to make the Giants at least respectable again.

No more Bonds

Not just Bonds, rumors have it that the Giants will be a bidder in the A-Rod market. The Giants seem stuck in the stagnant thought that big names put butts in the seats. Well, they are right in a sense, but honestly San Francisco has a park that is so nice it fills seats on its own. Should the Giants decide to sign A-Rod, they will have so much money tied in long term in Rodriguez and Zito that they’d be completely incapable of picking up any additional help. My theory would be to use their money to be more efficient, and even save some for a better free agent market.

This includes Andruw Jones… especially Andruw Jones. If they sign him they are seriously making a mistake.

Again… No more Bonds

The Giants have the personnel to staff their outfield as is. They will still have Dave Roberts and Randy Winn. They also have the youngsters: Nate Schierholtz, Fred Lewis, Dan Ortmeier and Todd Linden. If they must drop cash and pick up a big name player, they might consider Adam Dunn, Eric Byrnes or Milton Bradley who could probably be had pretty cheaply and might stay healthy if they keep him in a corner OF slot.

Its time for Eliezer Alfonzo

The Giants will be set at catcher and need to start giving more and more of the starts to Eliezer Alfonzo.

Oman Vizquel has old balls

It’s not that he can’t play anymore, it has much more to do with the fact that Omar is holding back Kevin Frandsen. If they let Omar go, Kevin can start as SS. They may lose a little in defense, and wost comes to wost they move Rich Aurilia over if he can still work the glove.

Vote for Pedro

Feliz isn’t anything great but he’s a cheap 90+ RBI source. With Feliz, you have a guy who can play 3B, 1B, and LF so there’s no sense in letting him go. He’s also one of the yonger 3B who will be on the market this offesason. As for first base, how about Dmitri Young? The Nats won’t re-sign him with Nick Johnson and Larry Broadway.

Randy Messenger is not Jeremy Accardo

Brian Sabean did this franchise no favors when he traded away Jeremy Accardo for a Shea Hillenbrand rental unit. Now the team is in desperate need for relief pitching. The team has Brian Wilson, Brad Hennessey, and Jonathan Sanchez. Even with them, just to be safe the team will need to sign at least one overpriced veteran for security. This means Antonio Alfonseca, Octavio Dotel, Troy Percival, Al Reyes or Mike Timlin might do. High risk high reward guys out there are Joge Julio and Kerry Wood.

That’s it folks, nothing revolutionary, nothing grand or life-altering. The G-Men really have their rotation set, and maybe if they make a few smart, cost-effective moves they can “compete” in 2008, after which they will still have the money available for a much bigger and better free agent pool in 2008.
