These Are Not Your ‘86 Mets

These days, there’s just no telling what goes on in locker rooms, evidenced by the strange decision of the New York Mets to shave their heads as a way to bond and show team solidarity.

“I don’t think it was any one guy’s idea,” third baseman David Wright said, showing off his new extra-short ‘do. “Just as a team, we thought about it, got clippers and started doing it. We’re trying to get everyone to do it.”

Gee, I don’t know, but since the 1986 Mets have to be the standard since they were the last World Series champs, I’d have to say this year’s Mets are way too naive. Thinking back to the ‘86 team, my guess is that the only way your head would get shaved is if you happened to be the first on the plane to pass out.

Actually, to be serious, I like the story a lot, because when you compare most other aspects of baseball to 20 years ago, things have gotten much shadier and much less fun, so its really quite endearing to see that there are just guys having a good time, which is what sports are supposed to be about in the first place. Kudos to the New York Mets, who’s strange bonding session reminds us all that even with all the money, press, and drama, baseball is still a game; a game in which it is still important that fans and players remember how to have fun and enjoy themselves because life’s too short not to.
