By now just about everyone has head something about the whole story about Torii Hunter sending champagne to the Kansas City Royals for sweeping the White Sox last year, and how The Cheaters Guide To Baseball realized that was a big no-no thanks to an arcane rule still on the books.
Any player or person connected with a Club who shall offer or give any gift or reward to a player or person connected with another Club for services rendered … in defeating or attempting to defeat a competing Club … shall be declared ineligible for not less than three years.
Okay, I can kind of understand the rule, but in professional sports… well, in any sport, is it really necessary to bribe teams to want to win? Does that even make sense anymore? I really don’t think so, and if anything, a gesture like that would only help to fuel the rivalry between the Twins and the White Sox and I can’t see anything wrong or bad with that.
But more importantly, how does Major League Baseball, a multi-million dollar organization still have someone getting suspended for three years for giving gifts to opposing teams, but only 50 games for a first steroids offense and 100 games for a second steroid offense? If Torii Hunter even gets punished, at all, its just another sign that MLB have no clue.
Finally, what’s up with stuff always popping up in a Sweeney’s locker? Bonds blamed his positive test on Mark Sweeney last year, and now Torii’s champagne winds up in Mike Sweeney’s locker. This only begs the question: what else is buried in a Sweeney’s locker? The other bloody glove? The secret to life?
Only time will tell, or Barry Bonds when the finger gets pointed his way again soon.
