Amazing What Back-to-Back-to-Back-to-Back Homeruns Can Do To Your Attitude

364523_phil-hughes-draft-coverage.JPGEarlier this year, even a week ago, the Yankees were making like Phil Hughes did not have the slightest chance at being called up this year. They were going to take it easy with him. But then, yesterday, maybe they figured out that a few bad outings are not going to kill Phil Hughes, but Chase Wright, giving up 4 straight dingers might just kill his career before he even gets be a regular in AAA.

So I wasn’t a big fan of calling up AA pitchers, especially when you have the pitching prospect of all pitching prospects in waiting. And in the long run, calling up Hughes is a good thing. These are the Yankees, and I know that losing is not acceptable, but I personally think the timing of the decision could not come at a worse time.

The news concerning Hughes came less than 24 hours after Sunday’s 7-6 loss to the Red Sox, who connected for four consecutive solo homers against rookie starter Chase Wright in the third inning of the contest.

The game was a fitting capper to a weekend in which the Red Sox pounded Yankees starters for 13 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings en route to a sweep of the three-game set.

Can’t have the press and the fans pissed off after getting swept by the Sox. I am personally glad Hughes is getting the callup, because when you have a guy like this, you really want to know if the hype is legit. But I’m also disappointed that the Yanks seem to have made the choice only as a bandaid to cover the huge wound that their Boston rivals just opened up.

If you are in fantasy leagues, make sure you’ve got a roster spot for Phil, and if you can, make sure to watch the Yankees against the Blue Jays on Thursday… I know I’ll be watching.
