I’ll admit that of all the college sports out there, I pay absolutely no attention to women’s basketball.. none. I don’t watch games, keep up with scores, or even really know who won the title this year. All that aside though, I do dig the story of June Daugherty, former head coach of the Washington Huskies’ women’s team. The Huskies fired June after their first round loss in the NCAA tourney, despite the fact that Daugherty has taken the Huskies to the tourney two years running and had an overall record of 191-139 overall and 123-74 in Pac-10 play.
So her dismissal was questionable, and as one might expect, upsetting to Daugherty. So if you are a pissed off, now former coach at UW, how would you react? If you said take a job with your former school’s biggest rival then you and June think alike.
“Go Cougs!” Daugherty said at the end of a news conference in which she took a few swipes at her former employer and promised to bring success to the downtrodden Cougars.
“Welcome to the new championship era in Washington State women’s basketball,” Daugherty said. “I am fired up.”
Aren’t college sports great?
