Imagine that. I didn’t even think that other schools competed in division 1 after many of the articles and columns I have read this week. But alas, there are other teams, and two such teams will play tomorrow night to determine who will be the champion… on the ice.
Boston College and Michigan State made their ways to this year’s championship of the Frozen Four, Boston College being the perennial guest to the final round of the college playoffs, and Michigan State rather like that guy who always seems to meet up with you even though he was certainly not invited (its MSU’s first title game in 20 years).
To me, college hockey is great because its guys who, for the most part, are unknown to the world yet they play a quasi-major sport. Most of the great college basketball and football players are household names… even some of the women’s hoops players, and their level of commitment to the sport is questionable at times. Go to college baseball, and they are typically equally unknown… except for some stars who are common only to the uber-geek baseball fan who scouts high school and college games for potential future sleepers.
No, I think for the most part, college hockey is still one of those college sports where it is played like college athletics are supposed to be played: with heart and for the love of competition and sport. Yes, many of these guys will (or already have been) be drafted or catch on with NHL teams, but this is the stuff that makes sports fun to watch… I mean, where else are you going to see something like this?
I love hockey, and college hockey even better. If you get a chance, check out the game, because with the horrendous TV coverage of the NHL, who knows, it might just be the only playoff hockey game you get to watch this year.

College hockey rules. It’s a shame that, beyond the Frozen Four, it doesn’t have much national exposure. Seeing a college hockey game in person can be great fun.
