We Are Wazzu

washington_state_cougars_80290.jpgAnd it seems that we all actually go to our classes, athletes included. The announcement last week that 3 of the 5 first team Pac 10 all academic team were WSU Cougs (Robbie Cowgill, Daven Harmeling and Aron Baynes) led me to look into just how Wazzu rates in athlete academics since I have a habit of ripping on the schools that put their players in underwater basket weaving 101 and 102 instead of real courses.

92 percent of WSU’s scholarship athletes who exhausted their eligibility graduated. That’s the second-highest rate of success in the Pac-10 behind Stanford (97 percent).

Like the school as a whole, WSU’s graduation rate for football players is No. 2 in the conference. Stanford is No. 1.

In addition, WSU is one of only three Pac-10 schools graduating football players at a higher rate than all university males.
WSU is the only Pac-10 school that graduates male student-athletes at a higher rate than all university male students

WSU in No. 2 in the conference behind Stanford in the graduation rate of African-American student-athletes

In today’s day and age with college athletics turning into semi-pro ball, its nice that there is a school out there that has players and coaches like Tony Bennett (who will be back at WSU next year) who have it all together.

Only one question remains though: will all that intelligence, you would think that someone would have prevented these unis from ever seeing the light of day:

Thanks for bringing Cougar academics to light. Wazzu’s had a history of putting the athelete’s education first. Just a note though. Coug unis aren’t all that bad. Try comparing them to the Oregon Ducks. I’d like to see the comparison of their academics as well.

    GO COUGS!

Im commenting on the fact that those unis were tight compared to what they wear now and when they came out with em i was like please wear these instead of the others for now on … and that they need to get rid of russell when that contract is up and get a new look an get out of these old lookin boring jerseys that make us look like ohio state. The cougs looked much better when the had the new futuristic unis not the old school plain jane ones which dont catch kids and young athletes eyes.
