Two biggest stories of the day involve moving on to finally get a piece of the pie.
First off, Tubby Smith, the now former Kentucky coach is going to announce tomorrow that he will be the new head coach at Minnesota. I can’t tell if he is just getting out before an imminent firing (or at the very least an uphill battle to keep his job), or if he really wanted the Minnesota job. Its really hard to tell because I’m not so sure that the job really all that desirable, especially with the Michigan opening. This just seems to be a little bit like the Nick Saban move: jumping ship to an “easier” gig before the pink slip came.
Then there’s Jonathan Papelbon, who is a complete ass for making fantasy managers nationwide figure out how to adjust their draft boards now that his request to retain the closer position, and not be a starter this year, was accepted. Honestly, I think he belongs there. If you are a team like the Red Sox or Yankees, you need a dominant closer. The Sox also have Lester probably being ready in the next few months, and let’s face it, trading for a fifth starter is much cheaper than getting a quality closer. Good move by the Sox, and it will be interesting to see how early he gets drafted this weekend, because I have the feeling someone is going to blow their load on closers… someone always does.
