Well, no, unfortunately he made sure that everyone knew who he was… especially lately.

Yesterday, Seattle officially stated that they will not re-sign the tight end who probably sealed his own fate with fans when he dropped three big passes in the Super Bowl. But the team was still hoping for a miracle, hoping that Stevens could fly straight, clean up his act, work hard, and finally live up to being a first round pick. But despite his on field problems, it seems to have been his off field problems that ultimately led to this… or maybe it was just a convenient excuse for the Seahawks to use to look better when in reality they probably needed a good reason to cut and run from a first round pick.

Ruskell verified Seattle’s lack of interest in retaining the tight end, an unrestricted free agent who spent his first five seasons with the Seahawks.

That interest disappeared last week when Stevens was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana in Scottsdale, Ariz. A Scottsdale police officer noticed Stevens driving erratically around 2:15 a.m., and Stevens reportedly told the officer he had “four of five margaritas” at Salty Seniorita, a downtown Scottsdale bar.

Stevens had previous off-the-field problems, pleading guilty and serving two days in jail for reckless driving in 2003. He also was convicted on a hit-and-run charge in 2000 after driving into a nursing home while a student at Washington.

Honestly, I really hate to be all, “I told you so,” especially since I didn’t say so then (probably because I was living in Colorado and the Broncos had their own bevy of problems to deal with) but don’t you think that maybe, just maybe someone crashing into a friggin’ nursing home is one of those tells that this guy might be a bit of a character risk? It’s either that or the fact that he went to U-Dub, but someone had to have seen this coming.
