The Miami Dolphins and San Francisco Giants are just enigmas right now, one team because they seem too willing to take on new players, another for being too hesitant to learn from their past mistakes.
First off, what is it with Florida teams stocking up on quarterbacks? Tampa trades for Jake Plummer and signs Jeff Garcia. Now Miami, who already has Daunte Culpepper and Joey Harrington wants Trent Green too. I really think that if Rex Grossman and Trent Dilfer can take teams to the Super Bowl, QB may not be important enough for this kind of stocking up. I also don’t really know why Green would want to have any part in this QB circus, its just strange.
Then there are the San Francisco Giants, who I love to hate because of their inept front office, who can’t decide whether or not to trade Armando Benitez. Right now (and I can’t stress the words right now any more than that in type) Benitez is healthy and pitching well. So the G-Men don’t want to trade him because he is actually healthy and pitching well, something that has been more and more infrequent lately. But they also know if they are going to trade him, they won’t get more for him than they can now. So if I may present my argument, it is far more likely that Benitez will eventually go on the DL and leave the Giants empty-handed (as he has done so well over past seasons), then them trading him and Benitez actually staying healthy a full season. I don’t understand how high-paid professionals can’t grasp a concept well known by 12 year old fantasy baseball rookies: avoid injury prone players. In this case, I really think the 12 year old would do a better job than current GM Brian Sabean, and I’d be willing to go through the bumps and bruises of a rookie closer now, rather than in July, August, or September. But I guess it just makes too much sense for a team who seems intent on imploding the franchise.
I mean, in two seasons, Benitez has appeared in just 71 games. I hate to say it, but the Giants really could use Joe Nathan right about now…
