Miami beat Maryland, Cal beat UCLA, NC State beat Duke, LSU beat Tennessee. For Maryland, I think this will drop them a bit, but they are still in. Everyone wants to see what the son of a former cokehead ballplayer (who used to be my idol by the way…before the whole drug thing… and a little after too…) can do on the court. Plus they beat some solid teams to finish the season. Its all wrapped up, get the chairs set for Sunday’s viewing party.
UCLA, two straight losses might drop them to 3 seed? Not that there is anything wrong with that. Not impressive stuff from the regular season Pac-10 champ, but it would seem that after winning the conference last week in Pullman they have been phoning it in. I’m looking at a quick exit from the NCAAs because even when you are a better team than that, when you take off a few games and start losing, its hard to get started back up again sometimes.. which is a perfect transition into Duke.
Duke has lost their last 3 games. Not only that, they have lost 6 of their last 11 and since their losses seem to come in bunches, if I were on the selection committee Duke would not be receiving a dance card. My guess is that they might squeak in on name value alone, but even so Blue Devil fans might want to start booking hotel rooms near Madison Square Garden just in case.
Tennessee, another interesting case… I think the win against Florida got them their bid already, and the fact that they only lost twice in February after losing 5 times in January helps their cause.
