I was reading The New York Times for a research paper I am writing, and came across a dandy of a tale. First off, if I were Joe Darger, I’d feel like an anorexic at a buffet table… which is a nice tie in because the kid’s dinner table at home is probably the size of a buffet table.
See, Joe’s dad has continued the legacy set forth by his family… that is to have as many damn kids as nature will allow him to:
John Darger is a 60-year-old real estate developer with bushy gray hair, a thin goatee and a deep singing voice. He grew up with 46 siblings. His father had several wives. Polygamy was passed down like a family heirloom.
Yes, passed down like… what? How is that a tradition? Its a lifestyle, but that would be like saying parents pass down their sexual preference to their kids… and I know that if that were true we’d have a lot of Republicans up in arms. But I’m going another way with this, forget the fact that on Thanksgiving they have like 247 places to set… I want to know what its like being a hard-core Mormon in Sin City. That can’t be easy.
[I was going to write more but when I was just looking up the online article to link to I saw that the topic is also covered at Signal to Noise, so I figure that if you want to read more, there’s stuff out there…translation: “I’m lazy”]
- just another American family (Signal to Noise)
- U.N.L.V. Forward Does Not Lack Family Support (The New York Times)
