Gary Matthews, Jr., say it ain’t so…. not that I really care. Gary Matthews, Jr. was one of many names that surfaced from the suppliers of steroids who got caught and pretty much told all. The Los Angeles Angels wanted Gary to just come out and speak to his innocence… instead this happened:
“Gary wishes to cooperate with Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Angels and any other investigative agency that may look into this matter,” lawyer Robert Shapiro said Saturday. “He is eager to tell his side of the story and looks forward to providing a statement once all investigations into the matter have been completed.
“However, it is my long standing policy not to allow clients to comment while an investigation is ongoing. To do so would be inappropriate and I believe irresponsible.”
Nothing says guilty in the city of Los Angeles like hiring a member of OJ’s ‘dream team’. Man, Matthews could have done almost anything, dance around a maypole in diapers, and at least kept some Barry Bonds-like denial to cloud the situation. But hiring Robert Shapiro is pretty much just as good as pleading guilty, so good job Gary, I hope your and your acne ridden back are happy, and I hope the Angels have a way to get their money back.

[…] Appropriate time… is that a joke? If now’s not good for you, how about next week? No, next month? Come one guy, this is not going away, you are not Barry Bonds, and if anything, because no one has been able to completely destroy Barry Bonds, you may have to go down in his stead. I don’t know why people have not learned more from Jason Giambi. There we have a guy, who took steroids, but on a day-to-day basis that is not what people talk about… never underestimate the power of a tearful apology. Denials and cop-outs only fan the flame. As I hinted a few days ago, Gary could really be doing almost anything else than the cop-outs and legal-speak. A nice press conference in the buff talking only about unicorns and your utter contempt for Tim Hardaway would probably do an excellent job at re-focusing the negative attention. […]
