When I was a kid I collected cards. I really don’t have much in my collection, and I think I stopped collecting when they started purposefully short-printing specific cards and putting in those damn inserts that drove the prices up. Anyway, that is nothing compared to what’s going on now with Topps.
Topps, who after being the leader for quite some time has now become the red-headed stepchild of card manufacturers, caught the handiwork of one of their employees during the final proofing, which was a Derek Jeter card with Micky Mantle and President Bush placed into the background. Instead of nixing the card as they should, they thought it was funny so they let it through, and plan on replacing it in the second series. So now the card is going for $40-$60 on eBay because of the short print that will occur.
This is just moronic, because what’s next? Every mouth breather at Topps with Photoshop will be putting themselves into the backgrounds of cards, and I would expect in the next few years that a naked spectator will be strategically placed into a card. So way to go Topps, you are now officially the Garbage Pale Kids of card companies. Good work, but as long as you’ve decided to completely throw away your reputation and whatever prestige you had left, here is my suggestion for series 2 of the set:

I wonder if this “accident” was intentionally done by Topps to draw attention to its latest card release…
