So I Guess JaMarcus Russell Is Going #1

February 22nd, 2007 · 3 Comments

i_russell_412.jpgWell, if there was any doubt whether or not the Raiders were going to plan on drafting a QB in the first round (and most likely with the top pick), I think doubters should think twice after the Raiders just cut Aaron Brooks, who by the way, is just really not going to do any good in the NFL anymore aside from holding a clipboard. He has a couple decent seasons with New Orleans when he actually had passer ratings above 80, but has never had completion percentages 60% or higher, and let’s face it: Charlie Frye had a completion percentage over 60% last year… once in a seven year career really is not asking for too much.

But the moral of the story is that I hope JaMarcus Russell is a praying man, because he’s going to need help if he does not want to become the next Andrew Walter, Marques Tuiasosopo, Billy Joe Hobert, Todd Marinovich, Major Harris, Jeff Francis, or David Weber… who are the QBs drafted by the Raiders since 1988. As a matter of fact, if you look back at the draft history of the Raiders, they have probably only selected two quarterbacks worth mentioning: Steve Beuerlein and of course Ken Stabler. So in the entire draft history of the franchise dating back to 1960, they really only drafted two noteworthy quarterbacks.

If you ask me, being a quarterback drafted by the Raiders is like the kiss of death, which of course having been raised by a Michigan alum, means that I’m all for Brady Quinn as the number one pick of the 2007 NFL Draft.

Russell is going to be a beast in the NFL!! I think Quinn will be good as well but he needs to prove himself in the big games or actually particpate in the combines.

Well, I agree that Russell is a good player and has what it takes to succeed in the NFL, possibly a better version of Daunte Culpepper.

But I also know that in most cases the player can’t make the team what it is, but the team can make the player, and the Raiders don’t exactly have an outstanding history of developing QBs, so even with talent I’d worry about JaMarcus if the Raiders take him.

[…] Look, I know I already wrote this guy’s career off a while back, but I was really hoping that Oakland would come to their senses and not pull a “Mario Williams”. But since they did go ahead and totally pooch the draft, the numbers guy in me instantly went running to see if I could, at all, back up my thoughts with some stats. I think before, I kind of shorted the argument, thinking that there was too much time to make any conclusions about the draft… but I should have known the Raiders would do the wrong thing. Now, let me start by saying that I do think that JaMarcus Russell is a great football player. In no way am I trying to make him out to be a hack… but put any top QB on a crap team with no help and voila, the ghost of old Ryan Leaf may just appear. And Russell may even turn out to be a good NFL player, but that still does not change the logic behind thinking that Calvin Johnson would have made a better long-term investment. […]
