ESPN/ USA Today… You’re Suspect

February 19th, 2007 · No Comments

espn1.jpgI noticed that WSU did not budge in the ESPN/ USA Today poll, and I can only interpret this as a full fledged personal attack.

Now Nevada is a pretty good basketball team, but they have not played anyone noteworthy… at all… the entire season. Like I said last week, if their games are good enough for TV then they are not top 10 material. If Boise State had been ranked a little higher in the USA Today football poll, I might be able to look the other way, but as the Broncos were ranked 9th going in, and 6th to finish, I have a hard time now seeing how Nevada could possibly be 10th.

Furthermore, one crack smoking voter put North Carolina as the number one team… less than a week after losing to Virginia Tech, who then dropped out of the top 25 because they lost at NC State. So somehow losing to a team who dropped out of the top 25 warrants a first place vote… what gives?

The only thing that is keeping me sane right now is the fact that college basketball has the common sense not to rely on rankings, and in the end the rankings hardly matter. Could you imagine if college hoops went to a BCS format so that their kids’ seasons did not go on too long? Because if that happened you’d have Flordia crying about how its not fair for two Big 10 teams to be in the title game, which seems oddly familiar for one reason or another…
