When Did America Become International Soccer’s Retirement Home?

February 18th, 2007 · No Comments

zidane.jpgFirst Beckham decides to bring his unique blend of soccer and STDs to the Unites States, now it looks like Zinedine Zidane has interest in doing the same. I suppose that it would be an interesting trend and something that might actually help to create some legitimacy to the MLS. Think about how much extra attention some Euro basketball league would get if Michael Jordan started playing there. I guess if the NBA was serious about setting up sister leagues overseas that’s not a bad idea on how to get started.

The sad thing about Zidane is that once American fans realize that he isn’t going to be headbutting players on a regular basis, that they will most likely lose interest. In a city where the MLS has to compete with such traditions as the Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, and Bears its not very likely that Zidane even makes a bleep on the sports radar in the city.

It is somewhat ironic though that Dennis Rodman’s old city, of all the cities in the MLS, is the one Zidane seems to have chosen.
