Well, if not all of Canada, then probably at least the city of Oshawa, who because the mayor lost a bet with (the one, but probably not only) Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report. The bet involved a game between the Oshawa Generals and the Saginaw Spirit, who’s been on Colbert’s good side ever since they agreed to name one of their mascots ‘Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle’. Say what you will, but it makes more sense than a Raccoon named T-Rac as the mascot of the Titans.

The one thing that I will say about the Colbert Report, is not just that its not just an amusing show, but its viewers seem to be willing to do whatever he tells them to. A while ago he prompted readers to update the wikipedia entry for elephants to state that their populations are on the rise… wikipedia had to lock down the elephant entry due to the amount of changes.

In a recent game between the two teams in Oshawa, the Generals held their annual teddy bear toss for charity. Colbert took mock offense and aired footage of the stunt, calling it “an obvious attempt to taunt me” in light of the show’s claim that bears are the No. 1 threat to America’s safety.

In retaliation, Colbert encouraged Saginaw fans to throw General Motors annual earnings reports on the ice during Friday’s game — and fans complied. He even posted a downloadable link to the financial reports on his Web site.

That prompted [Oshawa mayor John Gray] to issue the challenge to Colbert on a local radio station.

So now this March the city of Oshawa will celebrate Stephen Colbert Day, which will now the the only Canadien holiday that I understand.
