First off, I will say congrats to Petrino. He is a good head coach that deserved his shot in the NFL… my only question is why take that shot?

I guess its like the Star Wars movies. After Episode 1 you thought to yourself, “well, that sucked, but I bet 2 and 3 will be better.” And were you right? Of course not. If there is something we as people do not do well is to have long memories when it comes to learning our lessons. For example, despite what you told yourself months ago (or in some cases last night) at some point you will go back to that bottle of tequila… its your destiny.

So in some ways I can understand Petrino accepting a job to coach some birds in the pros instead coaching some birds in college. But, I mean… what the hell? Is the Nick Saban story not being covered in Louisville?

Let’s just take a look at exhibits A, B, C, D, and E: Nick Saban, Dennis Erickson, Steve Spurrier, Butch Davis and Mike Riley. With the exception of Erickson, none of those successful college coaches lasted longer than 4 years in the NFL, and Erickson is the exception only because the 49ers were dumb enough to think that it might work the second time around.

No, if you look at the current list of head coaches in the NFL in 2006 only one coach built his resume as a college head coach, and he is now once again a college head coach. Like a dog who you can forever get to chase that imaginary ball, I can only assume that the lesson has not been learned, and we will have many more years of this. So like one of those couples who break up and make up, the NFL has plucked another coach from the NCAA with the thought that “it will be different this time… he can change”. But he won’t change NFL. He will still leave his dirty socks on the floor, leave the toilet seat up, forget your birthday, and in 4 years time he will be gone.
