From the picture, you can’t exactly see it but its a behind-the-back handoff Boise State used to beat Oklahoma in overtime of the Fiesta Bowl last night. The first thing that I will say is congrats to Boise State. I had a feeling that Boise could run with the big dogs but had no idea they could actually pull it off… mainly because other than Oregon State the Broncos did not play any noteworthy teams in 2006… although two of the teams they beat went on to win bowl games (SJ State and Hawaii) and another lost to Miami by one point (Nevada).

With the success of the Mountain West in the bowl games this year as well (well, mainly BYU beating Oregon) is proving to me that although from top to bottom conferences like the WAC and Old WAC/ Mountain West are weaker than the major conferences, at the top they can play too, and maybe, just maybe someone will wake up and realize that with the reduction in scholarships that some schools like Boise State have and will do quite well recruiting and that a playoff system might be the way to go.

But the main thing that I took away from the game… especially when viewed directly after Michigan’s pitiful yet predictable performance against USC… is that BSU’s head coach Chris Petersen has cajones the size of melons… and is probably much smarter than people give him credit for. Both plays used to beat Oklahoma were routinely practiced plays, yet never/ rarely used and the result was that priceless look on the Oklahoma coaching staff’s faces like someone had just discovered that they were wearing matching Victoria’s Secret bra and panty sets under thier coaching apparel.

I love that attitude from a coach through (not the wearing of ladies undergarments… going for two in OT). Had they lost, most people would probably be writing that Boise State was not for real and that in the end they could not keep up. But they did not lose, the gamble paid huge dividends and caught the Sooners with their pants around their ankles.
