Rutgers… Disney Movie In The Making

December 29th, 2006 · No Comments

scarlet-knights.jpgThere have been a lot of pretty bad stories this year including wide receiver Chris Henry getting arrested for pulling a weapon on someone while wearing his own jersey; demonstrating not only in lack of common sense but also in the size of his ego for wearing his own jersey. In the midst of all that crap, we almost had a Disney movie moment with the success of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

The Scarlet Knights have been playing football since 1869. Until this year the number of their accomplishments was limited at best. In 137 years of football competition, Rutgers had boasted no national titles, no Heisman winners, no consensus All-Americans, and no Bowl Game victories… until now. At least in 2006 Rutgers was able to cross one of those off of its list, as the Scarlet Knights defeated Kansas State in the Texas Bowl yesterday they added their first bowl victory in their third bowl game during that 137 year span.

And with coach Rich Rodriguez seeming to be in it for the long haul let’s hope that we aren’t watching Remember The Knights in a couple of years.  Honestly, the surprising thing about this story is not that Rutgers finally got that elusive bowl win after 137 years, its probably a little more shocking that they still have a football team after all those years and nothing to show for it.
