The University of San Diego Toreros’ football team will unfortunately never make news like they currently are, but now they are making the headlines simply because their head coach, Jim Harbaugh, has been hired as the new head coach of Stanford.
The former star quarterback of the Michigan Wolverines had been coaching at USD, and had done a good job turning the program around (the team finished 11-1 in 2005) so since Stanford was in need of a coach I suppose Harbaugh seemed to be a good choice to fill the position. I think Jim will fit into Stanford brilliantly, as he got a DUI after the 2005 season and everyone is perfectly aware of the Stanford tree’s penchant for liquor: it is a well known fact that evergreens are much more prone to alcoholism.
But Harbaugh also has ties to Palo Alto, as the young Jim Harbaugh played at Palo Alto high school (a school I am well aware of as they were a team in our conference in high school), Palo Alto also being the city where Stanford is located. In addition, Jim’s father served as the defensive coordinator at Stanford in the early 80’s.
We will see if Harbaugh can get the Cardinal to win again, but its probably a good thing that the Cardinal grabbed Harbaugh since Mike Price was one of the other ‘available’ coaches of Pac-10 caliber, and I think that it is needless to say that “Go Cardinal” just does not roll off the tongue at a strip club, so he most likely would not have been a good fit.
