A lot has been made about the BCS decision, well voters’ decisions, to award Florida a shot at the title instead of giving that privilege to the second-best team in the country otherwise known as Michigan. And I can say that because Michigan had been ranked ahead of the Gators for eight consecutive weeks. If Florida was a better team than Michigan if they won out, then why would they not jump the Wolverines earlier? Was winning a game they were supposed to win really that much of a boost? If you ask me the premise of the BCS was to take the decision out of voters’ hands to remove speculation and doubt. Mission accomplished!
Just to clarify, I’m not saying Florida does not deserve a shot. I understand the reasoning, and the voters have essentially established an ad hoc rule into the BCS system that the title game should not feature a rematch. I understand that logic since there seems to be a thought process involved, I guess, well done.
So yea, it all makes sense, but it makes about as much sense as does a 2 loss Auburn team being ranked 10th in every human poll, but a 2 loss LSU team (which Auburn beat) is ranked 4th. And if championships matter (as in the argument that Michigan did not even win their own conference), why is a 2 loss Virginia Tech team ahead of the 2 loss ACC Champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons in two of the three human polls? It’s true Va Tech beat Wake, but Tech’s not the conference champ, Wake is.
So I guess what it comes down to is evaluating a system where the logic used to select the contenders for the National Championship is so flawed, that it does not hold true throughout the top 25. In the top 25 you have non-conference champs LSU ahead of the conference champs USC and Louisville. You have the non-conference champs Wisconsin ahead of conference champs Boise State and Oklahoma. Hell, the logic does not even hold up through the top 5, let along the top 25.
And throughout this mess there lies the possibility for two heroes to rise from the ashes: Florida coach Urban Meyer and Florida President Bernie Machen. After all the campaigning they did for a playoff system pre-BCS release on Sunday, assuming that it was legit and they were not just politicking for the 2nd slot in the BCS, they have a unique opportunity to hold firm ground to debate the BCS system and insist on a playoff system without being labeled a “sore loser”. If Machen can convince other SEC presidents to agree to boycott the BCS system, other major conferences will be quick to follow. All it will take is one major conference to drop out, and it all comes crumbling down, and in that sense, go Gators!
