Professional baseball in Freemont, CA?
According to an ESPN News report, the Oakland A’s will announce tomorrow that they will purchase the land and pay for the construction of their own stadium in Freemont, only 18 miles from San Jose. But Giants fans should not start crying just yet about the A’s creeping into the San Francisco market.
The A’s current lease expires in 2010 and thus I am sure that Alameda County, if not the city of Oakland will be forced to offer to pay for a new stadium for the A’s in the next two years. Honestly, it’s a really nice move by the A’s, who currently play in one of the worst stadiums to watch a baseball game in America: either they build their new stadium in Freemont, a city with higher per capita incomes than Oakland and more convenient for residents of San Jose and surrounding cities or they get a brand new stadium courtesy of the taxpayers of Alameda County.
