The Big Deal About The Big East

November 2nd, 2006 · No Comments

mascot_right01.jpgMany people hate the BCS and I am one of them. If the BCS were a person I would give it the ol’ fork in the eye. If you hate the BCS as well then its time to break out the scarlet and get on the Rutgers bandwagon.

Tonights game was a good start towards a BCS nightmare. The nightmare I speak of is a Michigan vs Ohio State rematch for the title game. To me that would be the final dagger in the heart of the system that is unpopular at best. First, it would be a rematch of the final regular season game for both teams. Second, the title game would feature teams from the same conference. Put both those together and it proves the merit of a playoff system.

So how does Rutgers factor into all of this? Well because, and I’m not being mean or biased just being realistic, the Scarlet Knights pretty much stand a snowball’s chance in hell of playing in a championship game. Of the five remaining unbeaten teams, Rutgers and Boise State are really just not going to rise to number two. Its just not going to happen.

So if Rutgers can beat Louisville next week, the chances of a Big East team being 1 or 2 in the BCS is slim to none. That only leaves Florida who will have to hope Auburn is the team they face in the SEC title game, and then of course they still do have to beat them. I suppose Cal could still come into the picture with a win over USC, but their week one beatdown at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers is still hanging over their heads.

All in all this could be a very interesting month.
