Oakland may may remember Orel Hershiser from such games as Game 2 of the 1988 World Series… or possibly Game 5, of the 1988 World Series. Yep, the World Series MVP for the Dodgers in their 5 game defeat of the A’s is now being considered for the managerial position that has recently been made available.
If nothing else, Orel should do a better job managing his pitching staff and won’t end up wearing out the arms of Harden, Haren, and Blanton before they even reach their prime… because with Macha for another three years all of their careers could have led to bullpen work (a la Kerry Wood and Mark Prior). But when you have a team that is led by and dependent on its young pitching staff this might be a nice hire… even though it is not all that likely.
