Today the New York Mets are going to celebrate the fact that 20 years ago they had a great baseball team. The ‘86 Mets, who were known just as well for their off-field failure as their on-field success, are still one of the most unique teams in sports history. It would be hard to find another group with so much success, and so much debauchery.
Ojeda is talking from his New Jersey home about an hour from Shea Stadium, where Saturday the Mets will celebrate the 20-year anniversary of their World Series victory. And while he admits time inflates all good stories, he knows the years haven’t exactly been kind to the ’86 Mets’. In those two decades, the headlines have trumpeted drugs, drink, steroids, rape, spousal abuse, suicidal thoughts, prison, bankruptcy, sexism, sexual harassment, DWI, battery, animal cruelty and, yes, gambling.
What, no steroids? If anyone has not read The Bad Guys Won, its a refreshing trip back in time when sports were fun, clubhouses were packed with ice cold beer, not suppliments and steriods. I’m so proud these guys were my heroes when I was growing up…
