First I will say that it is nice to see a sports organization actually stride to encompass morality in their everyday on- and off-field business. But are they taking it a little too far?
The Colorado Rockies, over the last few years, have embraced Christian morals and ethics and have made a point to make these things the main purposes of it’s employees (and players). This I love. Athletes who are actually held accountable for their behavior and are held to the same, mabye even higher, standards that we are held to in our daily lives and places of work.
Hearing the idea, and reading that the players back the policies makes sense to me. Bad PR and poor attitudes affect the community, front office, as well as the moral of the team itself. But some of the quotes in the article, are a little much to me. Again, I think it’s great they are making a push for athletes to be morally responsible, but these quotes and thoughts really trivialize religion in general and come off just a wee bit self-important:
“I don’t want to offend anyone, but I think character-wise we’re stronger than anyone in baseball. Christians, and what they’ve endured, are some of the strongest people in baseball. I believe God sends signs, and we’re seeing those.” - Chairman and CEO Charlie Monfort
I’m not really sure when the persecution of the Christians happened in recent years, and what they endured, but I know if I was a devout Jew, Hindu, or Muslim I would be offended.
“You look at things that have happened to us this year… You look at some of the moves we made and didn’t make. You look at some of the games we’re winning. Those aren’t just a coincidence. God has definitely had a hand in this.” - General Manager Dan O’Dowd
I’m sorry, but did he just suggest that God had a hand in the success of their offseason moves and current winning percentage? I would like to believe that God has more imporatant matters to attend to. Does winning percentage in baseball somehow equate to the level of their devotion to Christianity? If that’s the case the Kansas City Royals must be the most awful Pagans.
