An interesting trend, is the growing number of political veterans who are/have announced their interest in the open position as Comissioner of the National Football League.
The list is headlined by Jeb Bush, who says that the NFL contacted him directly about filling the shoes of Paul Tagliabue, who has stated that he is leaving his post once a replacement has been found. The list of others who have expressed interest is led by Michael Powell (former chairman of the FCC and son of Colin Powell), and Condoleezza Rice (U.S. Secretary of State): interestingly enough all three here are connected to the current White House, and most currently holding active positions in the political landscape. But if you consider these people qualified as an NFL commish, consider this: Paul Tagliabue for president, 2008.
I take two things away from all of this:
- Football is WAY more important to America than politics and government. If the Super Bowl was determined by popular vote, voter turnout for this would demolish those from the last presidential elections.
- Anyone who thinks Jeb Bush is a qualified candidate for NFL Commissioner probably also thinks that if they try hard enough, one of these days they will get that darn square peg though the triangle hole.
