I was thinking about it when I saw this today, that NCAA football is the only sport where champions are selected, in a large part, by opinion. Yes, they do have a championship game, but that would be like automatically passing along the top regular season NFC team and top regular season AFC team straight to the NFL. Anyone who has watched the NFL playoffs knows that these teams probably only make the big game half of the time. So think about how flawed this system is when taking that into consideration.
Now for the top 10:
- Ohio State (Big Ten)
- Oklahoma (Big 12)
- West Virginia (Big East)
- Texas (Big 12)
- Florida State (ACC)
- USC (Pac Ten)
- Cal (Pac Ten)
- Notre Dame (Ind.)
- Auburn (SEC)
- Iowa (Big Ten)
I guess since I don’t know too much about these teams I cannot comment too much but I am surprised to see Ohio State number one since they lost three linebackers, three defensive backs, and two offensive linemen. To me, that is way too much to replace, especially on defense… and they always say defense wins championships. Factor in a tough Big Ten schedule and I would be willing today to put good money on the field.
Then there is Texas, who probably loses out the most without Vince Young, also lose two cornerbacks, and one running back most likely gone because of stupidity. So I know these people are more expert than I am, but I just don’t see either of those two teams in the top 5 at season’s end.
